The Jeffrey W. Dean Memorial Award & Recital

The Jeffrey Dean Memorial Award, established in 2008, is available to seniors at Fox Chapel Area High School who plan on pursuing post-secondary education at an accredited school, college or university in any major course of study for the fall term of the next school year. To be eligible for consideration for this $2500 award, a student must have participated in a FCAHS music ensemble, exhibit leadership by example, and should have a passion for musical performance. 2025 is the 18th year that the award was presented. 

The Jeffrey Dean Memorial Recital has been established to showcase the talents of music students at Fox Chapel Area High School who have seriously studied a musical instrument through private training during their high school career. Fox Chapel Area High School has no other event specifically designed to provide this kind of performance opportunity for trained student musicians.  

In addition to providing musicians with a prestigious recital opportunity, the Dean Memorial Recital is intended to provide permanent funding for the Jeffrey Dean Memorial Award.  

Jeffrey W. Dean graduated from Fox Chapel Area High School in 1980. While in high school Jeffrey was an active participant and leader in Fox Chapel’s music programs, performed in four musicals, and was drum major in the marching band. Jeffrey went on to be the drum major in the University of Pittsburgh marching band and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering.  Jeffrey’s love of singing and musical performance continued to be an essential part of his life as he earned a master’s degree in computer engineering and began his career. 

Jeffrey sang with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus for two summers and participated in community theater programs wherever his career took him. After Jeffrey married and had a family, he and his wife Monica founded a studio of performing arts for children and directed a musical with the studio’s students each year.  On April 8, 2005 at the age of 43, Jeffrey Dean died of brain cancer,  leaving behind his wife and four young children. His family and friends have set up this academic award in memory of the joy he found and brought to others through musical performance.

Belle Voci is pleased to announce the 2026 Award Recipient of the Jeffrey Dean Memorial Award, Elliot Broyles! Belle Voci Board Chairperson, Vicky Rogers, together with Abby Dean, daughter of Jeffrey Dean and Monica Pica, presented the award at the annual Jeffrey Dean Memorial Recital, a performance that showcases the talents of music students at Fox Chapel Area High School.

Elliot was accompanied by his parents, John and Lauren Broyles. Elliott is an incredibly deserving recipient with a stellar musical resume. He has performed with the Fox Chapel Symphonic, Spring Musical, Jazz, and Marching Bands (where he was a featured soloist), and earned positions with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Allegheny Valley Band Festival, and multiple PMEA District, Region, and State Orchestras.

Beyond his musical talents, Elliott is a dedicated student advocate who leads the LIGHT Club (Leadership through Innovation of Genocide and Human rights Teaching). Elliott is headed to Carnegie Mellon University this fall to continue his music education.

The May 17th recital marks the 19th year this prestigious award has been presented. The honor recognizes a Fox Chapel Area High School Senior who has demonstrated leadership—both in formal roles and through personal example—and has shown a passion for musical performance throughout their high school years.

The Jeffrey Dean Memorial Award was established in memory of the 1980 Fox Chapel Area High School graduate who found and brought joy to others through musical performance. The Fox Chapel Area High School choral, orchestra directors, band directors, and a representative from the Belle Voci Jeffrey Dean Advisory Committee chooses the award recipient annually.

Belle Voci Memorial Fund

Founded in Memory of Gabriel T. D’Abruzzo

 

The Belle Voci Memorial Fund is a Board of Directors’ restricted fund. The Memorial Fund provides an opportunity for all persons to make specially recognized contributions to Belle Voci in memory of a friend or loved one who has passed away. Donations in any amount are accepted. The Fund’s primary purpose is to provide a special funding source for one-time purchases of specific items, not typically included in Belle Voci’s regular yearly budget. Each purchase requires Board approval. The Fund was established in 2019 in memory of Gabriel T. D’Abruzzo, who was the choir’s beloved piano accompanist from 2012-2018.

Craig Cannon's reflections on Gabriel T. D'Abruzzo

I met Gabriel T. D’Abruzzo in the winter of 1998 when he first played rehearsals for Fox Chapel Area High School’s spring musical. I was immediately drawn to his supreme skills as an accompanist and his willingness to ascertain the needs of my students.

That initial encounter launched a relationship that spanned over two decades during which I had the distinct privilege of working with him as both a solo performer and an accompanist for the many choral ensembles I directed. 

Gabe consistently approached work situations with a determined energy, a positive attitude, and a pleasant personality.

Directors and peers liked Gabe and valued and appreciated the infectious vitality and skill he poured into his work.

We launched Belle Voci in September of 2012, and by January of that same season, Gabe served as Belle Voci’s primary accompanist. The singers found in him the same spirit that everyone else had, and he remained in his primary accompanist role until his untimely death in June of 2018. 

I treasured every opportunity for my singers to work and perform with Gabe. He executed rehearsals with sensitivity and an ear for accuracy, and in concert, he infused the group with his joy and fervor for music.

As a soloist, Gabe dazzled audiences. As an accompanist, he possessed outstanding skills and technique, lyrical style, and expressive interpretation. He was an accomplished musician, a passionate music creator, and a gifted teacher with a superb sense of artistry that led him to the highest standards of professionalism. 

Most of all, Gabriel T. D’Abruzzo was an intelligent, reliable, congenial, sensitive, and considerate human being. He will remain in our hearts and minds forever.
